The story · Quarter-finals

Belgium began with a 1-1 draw against Egypt and was then held 0-0 by Iran despite taking 23 shots. It found its efficiency against New Zealand, winning 5-1 to finish first in Group G on goal difference. In the round of 32, Belgium came back from two goals down to beat Senegal 3-2 after extra time. It then dominated the United States 4-1 in the round of 16. Its run ended in the quarter-finals with a 2-1 defeat to Spain. Belgium therefore improved markedly after a hesitant start.
