As a co-host, Canada earned the first World Cup point in its history with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyle Larin equalizing in the 78th minute. It then recorded its first World Cup victory, a resounding 6-0 win over a nine-man Qatar, led by a Jonathan David hat-trick. A 2-1 loss to Switzerland left Canada level with Bosnia on four points, but through on superior goal difference. In the round of 32, Canada defeated South Africa 1-0 to reach the round of 16 for the first time. Without Alphonso Davies at kickoff in the next match, it created several chances against Morocco before losing 3-0, with Azzedine Ounahi scoring twice. The run unfolded despite Ismaël Koné’s serious injury against Qatar. Canada finished with two wins, one draw and two defeats, nine goals scored and six conceded. The campaign therefore delivered four national firsts: a first point, first victory, first qualification and first knockout win.
