Spain began with one of the tournament’s surprises, a 0-0 draw against Cape Verde despite taking 27 shots. It immediately corrected its inefficiency with a 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia, then won Group H by beating Uruguay 1-0 through Álex Baena. In the round of 32, Spain dominated Austria 3-0. Its round-of-16 match against Portugal remained tight until Mikel Merino scored in the 91st minute. Spain eliminated Belgium 2-1 in the quarter-final, the only match in which it conceded. It then beat France 2-0 in the semi-final: Mikel Oyarzabal converted a penalty won by Lamine Yamal, and Pedro Porro scored the second. As of July 15, Spain was a finalist with six wins and one draw, thirteen goals scored, only one conceded and six clean sheets. It was due to face Argentina on July 19 in East Rutherford. According to AP, Spain’s unbeaten run had reached 37 matches. The campaign combined three victories by at least two goals, two 1-0 wins secured very late or in tight matches, and a controlled semi-final against France.
