Germany crushed Curaçao 7-1 and then beat Côte d’Ivoire 2-1, securing qualification and first place in Group E. It nevertheless lost 2-1 to Ecuador on the final matchday. In the round of 32, Germany drew 1-1 with Paraguay after extra time and then lost the shootout 4-3. Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade had their kicks saved, while Jonathan Tah sent his attempt over the bar. This was a third consecutive World Cup ending before the round of 16.
