Iran drew 2-2 with New Zealand in its opening match and then held Belgium 0-0 despite intense Belgian pressure. A third draw, 1-1 against Egypt, gave Iran three points and an even goal difference. It finished third in Group G but fell below the qualification line for the best third-placed teams after Austria and Algeria drew 3-3. Iran was therefore eliminated unbeaten, but without winning a match.
