The Netherlands drew 2-2 with Japan, then overwhelmed Sweden 5-1 and beat Tunisia 3-1 to win Group F with seven points. In the round of 32, Cody Gakpo opened the scoring against Morocco, but Ismaël Diop equalized in stoppage time. After a 1-1 draw through extra time, the Dutch lost the shootout 3-2. Three players missed their kicks, with Yassine Bounou saving one. The campaign therefore ended despite a productive group stage.
From the tournament notebookAfter the shootout, Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber and Crysencio Summerville received racist abuse online, which was condemned by the Dutch federation.
