Qatar earned a 1-1 draw with Switzerland through a late equalizer, then suffered a heavy 6-0 defeat to Canada in a match it finished with nine players after two dismissals. It needed to beat Bosnia and Herzegovina to stay alive, but lost 3-1. Last in Group B with one point, Qatar scored two goals and conceded ten. The country remained winless after its first two World Cup appearances.

After the draw with Switzerland, coach Julen Lopetegui said Qatar had the right to dream; that dream collapsed five days later against Canada.
