South Africa lost the opening match 2-0 to Mexico, then drew 1-1 with Czechia. A 1-0 victory over Korea Republic secured second place in Group A with four points and the first knockout-stage qualification in the country’s history. In the round of 32, Bafana Bafana resisted Canada but lost 1-0. They left the tournament with one win, one draw and two defeats.

Midfielder Jayden Adams played during the tournament after his grandmother died on the eve of the match against Czechia; Reuters reported that context when announcing his death on July 11.
