The story · Group stage

Scotland won its opening match 1-0 against Haiti, giving itself a genuine chance to qualify. It then lost 1-0 to Morocco and 3-0 to Brazil on the final matchday. With three points, one goal scored and four conceded, Scotland finished third in Group C, but its total and goal difference were not enough to rank among the eight best third-placed teams. Its return to the World Cup therefore ended after three matches.

From the tournament notebook

Before the final match, Scotland could still hope to advance as one of the best third-placed teams, but first-half mistakes against Brazil compromised that scenario.
