Switzerland first conceded a 1-1 draw to Qatar, then accelerated by beating Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1 with four late goals and Canada 2-1 to win Group B with seven points. In the round of 32, it eliminated Algeria 2-0. Switzerland then held Colombia 0-0 for 120 minutes and won the shootout 4-3, reaching the quarter-finals for the first time since 1954. Against Argentina, Dan Ndoye equalized in the 67th minute after Alexis Mac Allister’s opener. Breel Embolo’s controversial dismissal, however, left Switzerland with ten men for part of the second half. Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez then made it 3-1 after extra time. Switzerland exited after winning its group, surviving two knockout rounds and matching its best finish in 72 years. The injury absence of leading scorer Johan Manzambi also weighed on the quarter-final. It also became one of the tournament’s clearest examples of a traditional knockout regular breaking through a long-standing ceiling.
