Uruguay drew 1-1 with Saudi Arabia and 2-2 with Cape Verde. It needed a result against Spain to qualify, but lost 1-0 to an Álex Baena goal after a Fernando Muslera error. Agustín Canobbio was sent off late in the match. With two points, three goals scored and four conceded, Uruguay finished third in Group H and was eliminated without a win, behind Cape Verde, which advanced with three draws.
