In its first World Cup, Uzbekistan lost 3-1 to Colombia despite an equalizer from Abbosbek Fayzullaev. It then suffered a 5-0 defeat to Portugal before losing 3-1 to DR Congo. Last in Group K without a point, Uzbekistan scored two goals and conceded eleven. Coach Fabio Cannavaro nevertheless emphasized after the opening match that the score did not fully reflect his team’s competitiveness, especially in the second half.

Fabio Cannavaro said he was proud of his players after the 3-1 defeat to Colombia, arguing that the final margin did not tell the whole story.
